Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

January 2009

Mosquito Lagoon's January Redfish Update

Mid Winter 2009 fishing has been a hit-or-miss proposition for sightfishing in the Mosquito Lagoon depending on conditions. January's winter winds have turned days of sight fishing into a day of blindcasting or looking for sheltered shorelines in the Pole and Troll zone or leeward shorelines. However, if weather conditions permit the sightfishing is fabulous and the redfish are on the flats in full force.

And guess what? There's not as many anglers in this sightfishing mecca known for plentiful redfish and hot headed anglers looking feveroushly for a secluded flat with feeding and tailing redfish during this time of year! Fishing leading up to and during January 2009 has been excellent for sightfishing in Mosquito Lagoon when the winds are cooperative and challenging when they are not. Captain Richard and a handful of other guides can help you catch your fish in almost any conditions if you're willing to try something other than sightfishing when the winds and weather do not cooperate.

PS: The Fly Fishing has been superb for a couple of our anglers when the winds have cooperated lately.

January Spotted Sea Trout Update

When you can find cooler waters in the Mosquito Lagoon, you'll often find some of the best sea trout fishing in the world. Since the constitutional net ban in the 1990's were implemented the trout fishing has rebounded back and our anglers are catching them by the bucket loads lately. Smaller trout are being caught on the transition edges of the flats where the water drops to 3-6 foot or more with small jigs, shrimp on popping corks or small topwater lures like the tiny torpedo. Larger trout are being caught in the shallower water when the water temperatures get comfortable enough.

The secret to winter trout fishing is cold fronts. We've have a few cold fronts and the sea trout fishing is in cruise mode as the mid winter is here, cold fronts are rolling through now and there's no better time than January thru April to catch that gator sized sea trout. Look for the best seatrout fishing between fronts and in the Indian and Banana Rivers. Sebastian Inlet area will hold some monsters and the Fort Pierce Inlet will provide success as we move further into the winter months and toward the spring. In most cases if you're targeting big sea trout January is a wonderful month as long as the weather cooperates.

January Sightfishing Forecast and Report: Mosquito Lagoon

We're not too far into January and we've already had a few days of sightfishing between the fronts. The weather's dropping the water temperatures and making the fishing fantastic as fish move from the deep holes and out on the grassflats to foriage for food and catch some of the year's best weather between some the years worst weather. Yes, January of 2009 has been up and down on the sightfishing in the mosquito lagoon, but if you're lucky enough to get a fair weather day, it's worth the risk of getting weathered out. By the way... if the winds are not condusive for sightfishing, we've been doing excellent, using both artificials and live bait for giant sea trout and many reds.

Fishing Updates and Information on the Mosquito Lagoon, Florida

Hello,
I'm Captain Richard Bradley and I provide the fishing report for the Mosquito Lagoon and it's adjacent waterways including the Indian River Lagoon and Banana River Lagoon. I've been fishing the Mosquito Lagoon waters and taking my customers fishing there for years and I'm always excited to show anglers about our fantastic fishery on Florida's East Coast. Many of my anglers return year-after-year and request me to take them back to the clear Lagoon known for redfish and trophy spotted sea trout.

I hope to see you on the water soon and may you continue to come to my Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report page often to see when you want to come and fish this extaordinary saltwater estuary on the Space Coast.

God Bless,

Captain Richard Bradley

Where is the Mosquito Lagoon?

The Mosquito Lagoon is located on the East Coast of Florida in Brevard County and Volusia County. It's located slightly northeast of Orlando and is relatively easy to access from Highway 50 or SR 528 when heading east from Orlando International Airport. We often meet anglers in the Indian River Lagoon and proceed thru the Haulover Canal into the Mosquito Lagoon to set their minds at ease about driving into remote locations on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Driving Instructions to one of our Mosquito Lagoon Boat Launches can be found on Haulover Boat Ramp which is between the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
