Bio Lab Boat Ramp At Mosquito Lagoon

Launching Your Boat And Fishing Around The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Tuesday June 27, 2017

Over the years the Biolab Boat Ramp at the Mosquito Lagoon has undergone several changes including it's name. During the late 70's and 80's this remote area was simply known as The Lightning Station because of the odd equipment used to research lighting for NASA. The Mosquito Lagoon and it's adjacent areas are well known as The Lightning Capital of the World. Lightning Strikes in excess of sixty per minute are not uncommon during severe weather on the lagoon. But this article is not about lightening on the Lagoon it's about a boat ramp and it's location on this world famous fishing area.

Heading north on SR3 from SR407 out of Titusville you'll soon see signs for Biolab Boat Ramp and Biolab Road. Simply turn east and you'll eventually get to a dirt parking lot, a place to pay and a shallow boat ramp. The new boat ramp has been moved from a dirt boat ramp in the creek to the south end of the parking lot to the northeast corner of the lot directly on the lagoon. Boats launching in this area need to be aware that most times of the year the water in the channel and at the end of the ramp is less than 2 feet deep and signed at 18 inches.

With access to the south end of the lagoon, the biolab boat ramp is directly across from Cucumber Island, Turtle Pen, Camera Pad and a short distant to the south is the Whale Tail sandbar and grass flat. It's a popular ramp with limitations on boat draft. A windy day on the lagoon leaves this ramp as a less desirable ramp for many experienced boaters because of the lack of depth and potential damage to their vessels.

Launch your boat from the Bio Lab Boat Ramp on the Mosquito Lagoon and fish around the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Kennedy Space Center.
